View from the south gatehouse, Kidwelly Castle
Wales

The imposing stone castle at Kidwelly replaced earlier Norman ringwork defences established after the Norman Invasion. It was built to a semi-circular design during the reign of Henry I to impose Anglo-Norman control over the rebellious Welsh princes in south west Wales.

Having fallen to the Welsh several times during the 12th century, the fortification was regularly upgraded with the latest advances in castle design, such as layered concentric wall defences and a well-defended gatehouse. These enabled it to withstand a fierce assault and siege during the Owain Glyndŵr rebellion in 1403.
