Saint David's Cathedral
Hobart

Designed by George F. Bodley (1827-1907) a leading English ecclesiastical Victorian architect, Saint David’s Cathedral is the second oldest Anglican cathedral in Australia preceded only by St. Andrew's in Sydney. It is a prime example of gothic revival elegance. Bodley designed numerous buildings in England including All Saints in Cambridge, Holy Trinity in Kensington, the Marlborough College Chapel and the London School Board Offices, among many others. He also designed Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and with his pupil James Vaughan, the Washington National Cathedral, (also known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul), in Washington, D.C. He never visited the Hobart site.

Construction took 68 years with the completion of the bell tower taking place in 1936. Saint David’s Cathedral is the spiritual centre of the Anglican Church in Tasmania and is also the seat of the bishop. It is listed on the Registers of the Hobart City Council, the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) and the Heritage Council of Tasmania.
Information about the church can be found at http://www.stdavidscathedralhobart.org/
