Before the 1906 earthquake horse-drawn carriages entered the hotel here. The lobby rose nine stories with balconies all around. The hotel was gutted at the very end of the fire, but was rebuilt promptly. The central atrium was once again roofed with glass, but lower, and the space became a restaurant. It has remained one of the city's most glamorous dining venues.
