Narsarsuaq was established in 1941 by the US Army Airforce under the codename Bluie West One.
During WWII is was an important steppingstone for planes crossing the Atlantic.

The US Airforce left the base in 1958 and it is now the gateway to Southern Greenland.

Across the fiord Eric the Red - the first European to settle in Greenland and whom Greenland can thank for its European name - had his farm.
