Standing on the cement foundations of the former Leathers Oil Company, a gas station & convenience store located along Highway 26 in Gresham, Oregon. On April 9, 1992, 18 year-old Tyrom Thies (also spelled as Theis) was hired on to work at the station however he was terminated on August 31, 1993 after allegedly stealing $30 from the station. He later returned the money & formally apologized.
The following year on January 17, 1994, a customer had entered Leathers & in the back had discovered the bodies of three women who were employed at the station. Their names were Virginia Kay Endecott, Rosealie Fey-Girtz, & Mary Beth Carey. All had been shot in the back of the head execution style. Along with that, over $9,000 had been stolen from the station's safe & cash register.
There were initially no clues until February 10, 1994 when law enforcement received a lead & Tyrom Thies became a prime suspect in the case. An arrest warrant was made official on February 16, 1994 however Thies was unable to be located. Police also looked into Lori Stephens, a friend of Thies, as well as Tyrom's cousin Lawrence Scherf. They stated that they had driven to the gas station on the morning of the murders but had no idea Tyrom was planning to rob it. Both of them would later be arrested & serve ten years each for felony murder for driving the getaway vehicle from the crime scene. At the time, it was speculated Thies had fled to Idaho & was using the alias Tyrom Walter Crozier.
As of the time of this panorama over 28 years later, Leathers is long gone & Tyrom Thies remains at large. He is likely still alive under a false identity. Branded one of the worst murders in the Pacific Northwest, this case has been featured on the shows Unsolved Mysteries & America's Most Wanted.

That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains.
