Battery Bankhead, Pit B - Fort Flagler State Park, Washington
Fort Flagler State Park, Washington

Battery Bankhead was completed in 1902 and was initially equipped with eight 12" Mortars, 4 mortars in each of two 'pits'. Half of these mortars were removed in 1918, and the remaining 4 were removed in 1942. Summer concerts hosted by the "Friends of Fort Flagler", a local volunteer organization which is active in the preservation of the historic sites within the park. Fort Flagler was established on the north end of Marrowstone Island in 1897. Along with Forts Casey and Worden, Fort Flagler helped defend Admiralty Inlet, the vital passage to the Bremerton Naval Shipyard and ports in Seattle & Tacoma. Today Fort Flagler State Park maintains the same borders as the original fort, with hiking trails, beaches, camping, museum, 5 vacation houses, retreat center and 10 historic gun batteries open for public exploration.
