The White Rocks feature is plutonic rock, formed from an intrusion of magma that solidified beneath the sedimentary rock of Utah some 40 million years ago. Erosion of the sedimentary layers over millions of years exposed the harder gray granite to the surface. In bright sun, the rock looks almost white at a distance. Up close and in the shade, it takes on a darker gray color. Lichen covers much of the surface in shades of red and orange. In the fall, the dry grasses of the surrounding valley shine golden in the slanting light.
