Vila do Conde, Portuguese Ship, 16th Century, Stern Castle,
Portugal
The Portuguese ship of the sixteenth century was a round ship, with high board, with a ratio of 3: 1 between maximum length and width, three or four decks, stern and bow castles, with three and two decks, respectively, whose architecture integrates perfectly with the hull; it flew three masts, the big and the beam with round cloth and that of the mesena with Latin cloth. The ship, thus conceived, met a greater need for cargo capacity than was known until then in Portuguese ships. The voyages to India were so long that they forced the ships to carry a large quantity of solid and liquid food for the support of the crew, especially since the route required long periods of navigation without seeing the coast or any other support points. . It adds the commercial factor: the trade in spices implied the transport of a valuable cargo, but also a bulky one, which required adequate spaces for its packaging. The ship responded to all this, with its bulky hull and ample capacity for accommodation. Stern castle
