Elgin Cathedral ruins, Moray
Scotland

Elgin Cathedral, or the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, was once one of the finest churches in Scotland, earning the nickname ‘Lantern of the North’. It was founded in 1224 as the seat of the Bishops of Moray.

Its decline began in 1270 when it suffered a damaging fire. It burned again in 1390 after being deliberately torched in an attack by the Wolf of Badenoch. The central tower collapsed at the turn of the 16th century and further damage was inflicted during the Protestant Reformation of 1560, leaving it in such a ruinous state that it was used as a local stone quarry.
