This building is the result of a series of attachments, reforms and adds from the nucleus of the old Paços do Council, to which the great remodeling and expansion initiated in 1849 sought to give a certain unit. He clutched the former Hospital of the Holy Spirit, who served as the pilgrims' assistance station to Santiago de Compostela and the old Chapel of Santa Maria, both of the 14th century. The tower and house of the chamber are from the fifteenth century and the church of the mercy of the 16th century. All faces of the history of this building (s) have been returned to you in our day through a rehabilitation and appreciation action.

Barcelean mercy would have been, according to some authors, founded in 1500. Others, however, point the year 1518.

The first stone of the old church of Barcelos mercy, with frontispiece, contiguous to the Palace of the county, facing the village square and the dwellings that were located next to the Matrix Chapel, would be released, according to Domingos Pereira, abbot Bay on January 22, 1593

Most of the hospital would have been reeded in the eighteenth century, with the Kings D. João V, in 1715 and D. José I, in 1755, granted for this purpose to third part of a CEETIL assigned contribution for a few years

The old church of Barcelos mercy would be disabled in 1846. The construction of the new Paços do Council would force the demolition of its façade and toppings, reaching us only the side walls of the ship and the chapel, as well as the cruise arch.
