Azibo, Protected Landscape, Reservoir, Braganca

The Protected Landscape of Albufeira do Azibo, part of which is included in the “Morais” Site of the Natura 2000 Network, is an interesting mixture of Mediterranean and Atlantic flora. Thus, alongside the cerercine oak Quercus faginea and chestnut Castanea sativa, which cohabit with areas of lameiro, the olive tree Olea europaea, the vine and the cork oak Quercus suber appear, in a mosaic valued for more undergrowth and rare vegetation in which stands out ten and a half of spontaneous orchid species.

The mountainous area of ​​medium altitude, it is one of the largest continuous units of serpentinites in Portugal, which gives it geological and botanical interest. It is the most representative area of ​​the Lusitano-Douro ultra-basics, covered by diverse communities and endemic species. Albufeira

The construction of the dam - with the objective of agricultural irrigation (5,000 ha in the Macedo de Cavaleiros valley) and home supply - which originated the Azibo reservoir (410 ha) dates from the late 1970s, from the 19th century. However, this body of water allowed the presence of several species of birds that made this area a nesting and refuge area, namely the crested grebe Podiceps cristatus, ex-libris of this Protected Area.
