Waldkirchen - Stadtplatz
Germany

Waldkirchen is the largest and youngest city in the Lower Bavarian district Freyung-Grafenau. It was in 1972 raised to town.

Story: 

The first mention of the place by the pastor of Waldkirchen happened 1203. 1458 extorted Kaplirz de Sulewicz Waldkirchen an arson. Bishop Ulrich of Nussdorf left then in the 1460s, a circular wall with ten towers and two gatehouses build. The oldest view of Waldkirchen from 1720 by Joseph Haas, the wall is still completely present, important remains of the fortifications are still preserved. In its over 800 years of history studied from 1492 to 1945 six devastating fires Waldkirchen market home. The fire of 1862 destroyed 140 houses. The last market fire occurred after shelling by US troops in the last days of the war on 26 April 1945. In this case, eight people were killed, destroyed 48 houses and the church and 120 families homeless. Waldkirchen in 1939 until 1926 inhabitants, 1950 there were 2647 and 1970, there were 3099. Through extensive incorporations, the population increased by 1980 to about 8800th.
