Trilhar o alto do Monte de Castro Laboreiro, em pleno Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, permite conhecer a antiga fortaleza de Castro Laboreiro e, ao mesmo tempo, desfrutar das mais belas vistas que Melgaço possui. Para aqui chegar, o caminho não é fácil, tendo que se subir uma boa parte a pé, até alcançar cerca de 1033 metros de altitude. Quando aqui se chega, porém, esquece todo o caminho que ficou para trás, tal a beleza e imponência da paisagem.
Da antiga fortificação medieval, quase em ruínas, é possível descortinar restos das muralhas, a torre de menagem e uma velha cisterna. A porta principal, designada Porta do Sol, é visível do lado nascente, enquanto a Porta da Traição ou do Sapo, no lado norte, dá acesso ao terreiro interior. A história deste local começou na Idade do Ferro, sendo mais tarde aqui construída a fortaleza, pela mão de Dom Afonso Henriques. Depois de ser destruído por um violento temporal, Dom Diniz reconstruiu-o – tudo isto prova a sua importância estratégica e histórica, que apenas vem reforçar o misticismo que o local transmite. Para além da historicidade subjacente ao local, este granjeia uma visita também pelas fantásticas panorâmicas que oferece.

The European Union originated in 1993 and is now composed of 27 member states. Its headquarters is in Brussels, Belgium.Do not confuse the EU with the Council of Europe, which has 47 member states and dates to 1949. These two bodies share the same flag, national anthem, and mission of integrating Europe. The headquarters of the Council are located in Strasbourg, France, and it is most famous for its European Court of Human Rights. In spite of these two bodies, there is still no single Constitution or set of laws applying to all the countries of Europe. Debate rages over the role of the EU in regards to national sovereignty.
