静岡英和女学院は1924年に近江八幡在住のアメリカ人建築家Ｗ・Ｍ・ヴォーリズに学校校舎の設計を依頼する。その校舎は二年後に完成するが、その後さらに体育館・寄宿舎・宣教師館等の設計が依頼された。これらの計画は静岡大火や戦争による資金調達の困難化などにより頓挫、美しかったと言われる校舎も戦火により失われる。

旧宣教師館の各々の部屋に入った時の第一印象は「明るい」の一言に尽きるように思う。リビングルームに入った時の印象もまた同じ。この部屋の南側の部分は窓が３面に開いている。ヴォーリズの設計した住宅にはサンルームの設置されることが多いらしいのだが、この旧宣教師館では特にサンルームと称したものは作られていない。しかし、このリビングルームの明るさは、十分にサンルーム的な役割を果たしているように思える。ずいぶんと思い切った採光の仕方のように思える。
白く塗りこめれれた天井には太い梁材が３本渡されており、強いアクセントとなっている。天井の雰囲気は旧マッケンジー住宅の食堂と似ている。設計年代が大きくは離れていないため共通しているのだろうか。
部屋中央のマントルピースもまた洋館に必須の設えとして印象的だが、デザイン的にはマントルピースの周囲を木目を見せる形で木材で囲われているのが新機軸なのだそうだ。
この広いリビングルームでは「宣教師館」の時代には「バイブルクラス」やクリスマスパーティー等の集まりに利用されていたという。隣の部屋と連動して使えばスペースとしてはさらに広がり、大人数の集まりにも十分に対応できたと思う。
隣の部屋は「食堂」として設計された。その後、オーナーの変遷の中で和室に改装され、床には畳が敷かれていたという。もしオリジナルのままでこの部屋が伝わったならば、内装はリビングルームと共通のデザインとなったと思われる。「洋間の中に和室をはめ込んだ」という改装はかなりしっかりとした造作となっているらしく、建物修復の際にもこの部屋をオリジナルの形に戻すことはできなかったという。オリジナルの維持という点では惜しまれる改装だが、一つの建築物のたどってきた歴史の一コマとして受容するべきなのだろう。
