John Dillwyn Llewelyn observatory, Penllergare, Swansea, Wales, UK
Wales

The John Dillwyn Llewelyn (1810 - 1882) observatory was built by the 19th Century botanist and photography pioneer. He was married to Emma Thomasina Talbot, related to William Henry Fox Talbot the photography pioneer. After installing a telescope in the building, he and his daughter Thereza experimented with taking some of the earliest photos of the moon from 1857. His efforts led to the site becoming a local hub for stargazing. Llewelyn an industrialist was a founder member of the  Royal Photographic Society in 1850s. The adjacent mansion house has long gone, but the observatory is now to be restored as part of the £2.9m project to restore the Penllergare valley and woodland.Work on the observatory, a scheduled ancient monument, is expected to take 18 months.
