Fantasy Canyon, Utah, USA
Utah

Fantasy Canyon is an erosion feature set in an ancient lake bed in the Uinta Basin.  The erosion of the softer shale left behind the harder sandstone to produce the very fine features observed in this little canyon.

The shale deposits are also rich in oil, natural gas, and other hydrocarbon deposits.  Not far from the site of this photo you can find a long vein of black crystals called Gilsonite, a form of natural asphalt.
