They are not pink at all, more of a rusty red, but uniquely beautiful nonetheless. The sand has eroded from nearby cliffs and buttes composed of Jurassic age wind-deposited sand. Some areas have been stabilized by desert shrubs and ponderosa pine, but the dunes remain active.
