A 91m aerial view overlooking Britannia Beach, British Columbia. The unincorporated community had a 2016 estimate population of 373. In 1888, copper was discovered on Britannia Mountain leading to the formation of the Britannia Mine which was in production until 1974. In years following, Britannia Creek was found to have large amount of acid mine drainage coming from the mines, at one time making it one of the most polluted creeks in North America as the metal-heavy waters filtered into Howe Sound. Major cleanup efforts were underway & by 2008 nearly 99% of mine pollution had been stopped. By 2011, the first pink salmon returned up the creek for the first time in over a century. In this view, much of the bright green color of Howe Sound is due to glacial silt coming in primarily from the Squamish River.
