Betty Corrigall's grave, Hoy
Scotland

Betty Corrigall's grave is one of the most visited in Orkney, after lying unknown and undisturbed for 160 years.

She was a young woman who killed herself at the second attempt after falling pregnant by a passing sailor who abandoned her. In the 1770s, such things were frowned upon. As a suicide, she could not be buried in consecrated ground; thus, she was buried in an unmarked grave in remote moorland on the boundary between the parishes of North Walls and Hoy.

In 1933, her coffin was accidentally uncovered by peat cutters, with her preserved body inside. After being reburied, it was disturbed again in 1941 by road builders and subsequently moved the short distance to its present location. The grave was fenced and marked in 1949. With the soft ground unable to support anything heavy, a fibreglass headstone was added at a burial service in 1976.
