奈良公園の南側、鷺池の中に立つ「浮見堂」という東屋。使われている材木はまだ新しいように思えるのだが、その佇まいは周りの風景に溶け込んでいる。
1916年に作られたというのだが、池の中にあるためか傷みも早かったのだろう。1991年から3年にわたって修復工事をして、現在の姿になったそうだ。静かな所で、意外と観光客は少ない。東大寺や春日大社といった観光スポットから離れているためかもしれない。
この付近は、例えば道を隔てて若草山方向に広がる浅茅ヶ原の丘陵地のような高原を思わせる風景を見せるところもあり、秋になるとその風景の中の所々に赤く色づいた木々がアクセントのなって大変美しい。浮見堂付近や浅茅ヶ原のような場所はあまり観光地化されずに、その静かな佇まいのままで後まで残っていくとよいように思う。
