Portland Sand Dunes
Victoria
This section of Discovery Bay National Park, contains some 20+kms of tall bare high sand dunes. This area, approx. 1800 hectares is also the home of the Portland Sand Dune Buggy Club, http://www.portlanddunebuggyclub.com.au/ It is the only place in Victoria you can legally drive on sand dunes. There's good winter fishing for Salmon, Mulloway and Gummy shark so you'll often see surf rods bending to the ebb and flow of the huge surf which pounds this section of coast. It's a wild place well worth visiting even if you don't go for a drive on the dunes. Winding through this magnificent area is the Great South West walk http://www.greatsouthwestwalk.com/intro/ The Great South West Walk has been developed as a bushwalking trail suitable for most ages and abilities, Comprising short 2 hour loop walks, full day walks, or for the intrepid, the whole 250km loop that begins and ends at the Maritime Discovery and Visitor Information Centre in Portland Victoria, Australia. The walk is often described as a symphony in four parts: The Coboboonee Forest, The Glenelg River and Gorge, Discovery Bay Beach and Mount Richmond, The three Capes and Bays The walk contains sixteen camp sites along the track; all supplied with fresh water, wood barbecues, cleared tent sites and bush toilets

More About Victoria

Victoria is Australia's second smallest State and covers only 3% of Australia's land area but has the second highest population of all States and Territories. Victoria's mainland and islands have a total length of 2,512 kilometres coastline which is about 4.2% of Australia's 59,736 kilometres of coastline. Australia is the driest inhabited continent and Victoria is no exception although the state capital Melbourne has the reputation to have 4 seasons in one day. Victoria is located in the southeast of mainland Australia and includes the most southern point on mainland Australia at Wilsons Promontory National Park.
