This square in the center of Siena is dominated by the marble facade of the dome Santa Maria. The building of the dome started around 1210 and ended unfinished in the 14th century. The big building vis-a-vis of the dome is the Ospedale di Santa Maria della Scala, built in the 13th and 14th century. In 1995 Siena became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The West coast is bathed from the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Sea; here we can find the islands of the Tuscan archipelago including the island of Elba. The regional capital is Florence and the other provinces are: Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
