ＪＲ由比駅から南へ下る。途中、倉沢の街並みを抜けていく。点在する古い家屋、倉沢は由比宿と蒲原宿の間に置かれた間の宿、薩埵峠を越える旅人が一息入れた場所だった。駅から２０分ほど歩いて倉沢の街並みの端に着くとそこからは上り坂の山道、薩埵峠へ至る。現在では薩埵峠までの間は農道として整備されているから歩きやすいが、しばらくは急な坂道が続く。４０分ほど歩いて薩埵峠に着く。そこで一休みし、峠から富士山の眺望を楽しみ、もと来た道を下る。
来た時には上り坂を歩くのに必死で周囲の風景を気に掛ける余裕は無いのだが、下り坂となり周囲に気を配る余裕ができると、それまで気の付かなかった風景が見えてくる。
この時期はかんきつ類の収穫の最盛期のようだ。２月の頭だと甘夏の時期だろうか、大ぶりの実が多数木に釣り下がっている。そしてそれらの木々の間からときどき富士山がその姿を見せる。
先ほどは薩埵峠で富士山を望む絶景を見てきた。それに比べたら絶景ではないでは無いだろう。しかし、ホッとする風景だ。多分この付近に住む人にとっては見慣れた風景なのだろうと想像する。
薩埵峠までは車で行くことが出来る。そして、実際に車で行く人の方が多いだろう。しかし、この道を歩くことで見つけることのできる風景もある。こんな風景を見つけることのできるのが時間をかけて歩くことの楽しみである。
