ここは、本当は教えたくない場所だ。とはいえ、｢古い宿場町｣としての知名度はそれなりに高い。
｢海野郷｣としてのこの地域はすでに奈良時代からその存在を確認することが出来る。平安後期から戦国時代にかけてはこの地域の豪族海野氏によって支配されてきた。江戸時代には北国街道の宿場町として栄えるが、明治以降鉄道が街のはずれを通ることにより町は衰退しかけた。その時、宿場の建物の特徴である二階の広さを生かして養蚕が行われるようになると、街は再び活気を取り戻していったという。
40年ほど前に訪れたとき、この町は町並みの保存状態が悪く、このまま街並みが失われてしまうのではないかと心配させられた。しかし、その後文化財の指定を受けてから適切な修復・保存が行われるようになり、街並みはよみがえった。その街並みの美しさは、他の「有名な日本の古い街並み」に決して引けを取らない。
確かに、休日であればここを訪れる人も多いだろう。しかし、先日私が此処を訪れたときには、この町は実に静か、すれ違う人も殆どいなかった。
この町は、「観光客を目当てとした商売」を行うような雰囲気があまりない。そのことが、この街並みに「落ち着いた雰囲気」と「独特の美しさ」を与えている一つの理由になっているように思う。ただ、そのことに物足りなさを感じる人もいるかもしれない。
「この美しい街並みを多くの人に知ってもらいたい」と思う半面、「"大勢の観光客"によってその雰囲気を壊されたくない」という思いも強い。その意味でもこの街並みの「落ち着いた雰囲気」に憧れ、楽しむ事の出来る人に訪れてほしい。
