近鉄奈良駅を東向商店街側に出ると、噴水に囲まれた行基菩薩像が立っている。良く目立つから、多分待ち合わせの場所としてうってつけだろう。この像の上には、以前は吹き抜けとなっていたが、いつの間にかガラスの屋根で覆われている。「人の集まる場所」としての機能が強化されたようだ。
行基は奈良時代の僧で直接民衆の中に入って仏教の布教にいそしみ、また彼と彼を中心とした集団は貧民救済・治水・架橋などの社会事業を行った。民衆の中に直接入っていく彼のスタイルは朝廷からは嫌われ弾圧も受けたが、行基自身に反政権的な意図がない事、そして民衆に対しての強力な影響力が評価され、やがて朝廷から厚遇されるようになる。当時造営中であった大仏(東大寺)についても協力し、その功績により「大僧正」位を授けられた。このように当時の権力に抱き込まれた感もなくはないが、宗教が国家護持としての色彩の強かったこの時代にあって直接民衆の中に入っていった彼の存在は高く評価されるべきだろう。
