This monument shows the "Göttinger Sieben" ('Göttinger Seven') and king Ernst August I in their conflict about the first constitution in the state of Hannover This constitution had been established under the rule of Ernst Augusts brother, Wilhlem IV. in 1833. When Enrst August I. became king in 1837, he felt himself not bound by this constitution and professor Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann tried to raise a protest by his fellow professors at the university. He managed to find only 6 collegues willing to sign a protest note: Wilhelm Eduard Albrecht, Heinrich Ewald, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Georg Gottfried Gervinus, Wilhelm Eduard Weber.
