Belt Creek Trail On A Mine Tailings Pile
USA
Most of the upper Belt Creek Trail follows along the creek. However, there is one short section which climbs a short hill that overlooks Belt Creek on river-right. While we look down at the creek we need to recognize that the trail beneath our feet is following an old mine tailings pile of crushed limestone. You can see the conical shape of the top of the trail. When mining was active here there was an old mine rail set up here to dump the tailings. If you rotate the view to the high cliffs to the right you will be looking at the remains of the old limestone quarry that was once active in the canyon. The trees and brush have grown up around the quarry workings, now, but there are remnants of the mining process that once took place here. This portion of Belt Creek flows through Sluice Boxes State Park in central Montana. The hiking trail through Belt Creek canyon follows the old, abandoned, rail bed of the Central Montana Railroad. The ambitious rail project required sixteen crossings of Belt Creek. Numerous trestles were also built to cross side-canyons along the way. The railroad bridges across the creek are long gone and fording of the creek is required to hike the trail.
