The Illinois Monument at Cheatham Hill in Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park
Atlanta
In 1913, the State of Illinois provided $20,000 to proceed for what would become the Illinois Monument. On June 27, 1914, fifty years after the battle had taken place, the monument was unveiled. The Civil War Battle here at Cheatham Hill resulted in over 3000 casualties in less than an hour. It is a part of the Kennesaw Mountain National Park.

More About Atlanta

Capital and largest city in Georgia, Atlanta is known the world over for its parks, professional sports teams, shopping, museums, and entertainment. One of the fastest growing cities in the United States, Atlanta has been commended by the Environmental Protection Agency for its determination to implement ecologically friendly policies. Unlike many other Southern cities, Atlanta broke with its historic Old South architectural characteristics and opted for a progressive modern style led by native Atlantan John Portman, who created the atrium hotel in 1967 when he designed the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.
