Walk 100 yards from the campground at Simpson Springs or 20 yards past the ruins of the CCC World War II camp and you'll come upon an outcrop of brilliant light green rock. There are smaller patches near the Pony Express cabin, but the outcrop is much more expansive here. From boulder size to sand, the green rock spills down the hill.
The rock is actually a form of volcanic ash, fused solid either under its own weight when it fell or simply the heat of the eruption. I haven't been able to find out what lends it the green color, but it's definitely an unusual sight!
