Sernancelhe, Romanesque Church, portal
Portugal

Although the date of construction of this singular Romanesque church is unknown, the year 1172 appears as a likely approximation, since it is the only documentary reference of the town in that period. The temple is a characteristic monument of Romanesque style, whose head appears to be the oldest portion.

The main portal, whose composition was established as the monument's trademark, is later, attributing some authors to its construction to the 14th century. It is a wide entrance, with a perfect round arch based on three archivolts, the average decorated with a unique sequence of ten angels with open wings. The eardrum is even more original, although it corresponds to a modern period improvement - it has an irregular trilobed arch and has geometric and vegetal motifs, flanking a central oculus. On both sides of the portal, crowning (and symbolically controlling) the entrance, there are two sculptural groups inscribed in niches - one on each side -, representing São Pedro, São Paulo and the Evangelists. The rest of the front is modern, from 1636 (bell tower) and, possibly, from the 18th century (upper register of the main facade).
