Monastery of Batalha, D.Afonso V Cloister , Garden
Portugal

Cloister D. Afonso V, built in the reign D. Afonso V (1448-1482) by the master Fernão de Évora. This is the first two-storey cloister in Portugal. The upper floor has a wooden roof, and its style is much more regular and austere than the Royal Cloister. Intended for the daily life of the Dominican friars, its simplicity even today allows attentive visitors to grasp some of the mysticism that emanates from these cloister spaces. It is important to note that this Cloister is more recent than the Royal Cloister, however it has an almost medieval aspect, more austere, without flaming laces or canopial arches, looking even older than the other cloister.

This is a rationalistic purification architecture, the so-called «Gothic Despojado», a variant of the Tardo-Gothic that had some projection in Portuguese architecture between ca 1430 and ca 1460. Another example of this style is the Church of the Convent of Palmela 1443-1460.
