Bells Canyon, Sandy, Utah, USA
Utah

Midway between the lower and upper reservoirs, the Bells Canyon hike passes cliffs of granite.  The rock here intruded as magma into the overlying older layers, the result of the mountain building that has been going on for the last 65 million years in this area.  This particular granite comes from magma that cooled below the surface some 30 million years ago, magma from the melting of the much older Pre-Cambrian rocks found at the lower end of the canyon.
