1927年10月至1929年1月，毛泽东率湘赣边界秋收起义部队来到茨坪就居住在这里。在这一年多的时间里，毛泽东多次主持召开党、政、军会议，研究部署根据地的各项工作。《井冈山前委对中央的报告》即《井冈山的斗争》一文在这里起草，从理论上全面系统地总结了创建井冈山革命根据地的经验，阐明了“工农武装割据”的崭新思想。
1929年1月14日，毛泽东率领红军主力离开井冈山。这栋房子被国民党反动派烧毁。1961年重新修复，被列为国家重点文物保护单位。
