Jeronimos Monastery, Vasco da Gama Tomb
Lisbon

Vasco da Gama was born in Sines, perhaps in 1468, and died in India in December 1524, when he had only been viceroy for three months. He was the second son of Estêvão da Gama; the firstborn was Paulo da Gama, who accompanied his brother on the 1497-1499 trip to India and died near the end of his return, on Terceira Island. The chronicles that Vasco da Gama "" of medium stature, of a knightly genius, bold for any great feat, in the harsh command, and enough to fear in any passion, suffer from work and very inflexible in the punishment of guilt in fulfillment of justice, say . "" The audacity is the inflexibility of Vasco da Gama's temperament and that of his men, who knew how to fight with the furies of the sky, the sea and the land, allowed the writing of a new page in World History. His remains were transported from the East to the convent of Nª. Mr. das Relíquias, near the village of Vidigueira, where they remained for three centuries. In 1880, the bones of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões were transferred to the Jerónimos Monastery. Its tombs, by the sculptor Costa Mota unio, are found in the church's sub-choir. Vasco da Gama (on the north side) and Luís de Camões (on the south side) were the two maximum representatives of the Portuguese epic, who deserved the honor of resting beside kings. "
