Mawsons Room, Mawson's Huts, Cape Denison, Antarctica.
Antarctica

The interior of Douglas Mawson's room, Mawson's Huts.

This was Mawson's private room during the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition.

The room is extremely cold, with an average ambient temperature of -3ºC. During winter it builds up a dense layer of hoar-frost that gradually ablates over the summer months, but which never completely disappears - it is like a chamber of crystals.

The room is filled with artefacts from the time of the AAE - some prints upon the walls, domestic items such as plates and cups, Mawson's chair and bed.

The buildings at Cape Denison are a historic site being conserved by the Mawson's Huts Foundation and Australian Antarctic Division.

Immersive imaging by Peter Morse.
