Amberley Church, West Sussex

St Michael's Church, Amberley, West Sussex

The church at Amberley in West Sussex dates from the middle of the 12th century. The chancel and tower were added in the 13th century. On the south side of the chancel arch is a wall painting dating to  the 14th century. This depicts the Passion Cycle including the Flagellation and the Road to Calvary, the Crucifixion and Three Marys with Joseph of Arimathea. On the wall in the south aisle there is a small roundel with a delicately painted female head, probably dating the the 13th century. St Michael's is included by some as one of the Sussex churches of the 'Lewes Group', all known for their murals. Others include Hardham, Clayton, Coombes and Plumpton.
