The Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God is the largest temple in the city of Orel. Side chapels of the church: in the name of the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica; the Savior Not Made with Hands; the Ascension of the Lord; the Holy Great Martyr Tatiana. The church was consecrated in 1895. Russian-Byzantine style architect Nikolai Yefimovich Yefimov. It was built at the expense of a merchant, a hereditary citizen of Ivan Serebrennikov. The church was closed at the end of 1938. In 1941, the bell tower with a height of more than 50 meters was lost. From 1956 to 1995 it was used as a bakery. In 1994, the church building was returned to the Oryol-Livensky diocese. It is a memorial church to the defenders of the Fatherland. From June 2008 to June 2009, the church was a cathedral.
