Vinhais, Old castle, aerial, Braganca
Portugal

The reconstitution of the Vinhais castle plant today presents important difficulties that arise, above all, from its state of conservation. The urban evolution of the village masked the architecture of the fortress, so there are few structures that retain any integrity in relation to the buildings that have occupied the entire walled space. The defensive structures that maintain some autonomy in relation to the urban network of the agglomerate are extremely sparse and always partially in solidarity with the surrounding constructions. They remain with some degree of integrity: the door of S. Facundo and the door of Senhora das Portas Abertas, each flanked by two towers, belonging to the old fence and facing, respectively, south and northwest; the door of Santo António, belonging to the old barbican, in a border position with the door of Senhora das Portas Abertas; the north tower, partially destroyed; and a barbican cloth, with associated cube, on the south side. The tower on the east side is also easily cut into the urban fabric, although it has been converted into a private chapel since the 1950s. The construction material used in the edification, either of the fence or the barbican, is shale stone, giving shape to an irregular masonry with sand and lime mortars.
