Shinn oaks at Monahans Sandhills
USA
Shinn oak, also known as gray oak and scrub oak (Quercus grisea) grows throughout the trans-Pecos part of Texas and into adjacent southwest states. It is found here on some of the higher dunes, stabilizing the sand and preserving the dune's shape and location. The oaks seldom grow more than four feet tall, but have roots reaching down fifty or more feet to groundwater.
