A small stream flows in spring through the Frijoles Canyon in Bandelier National Monument. Because of fires in previous years at the higher elevations, this canyon is prone to severe flash flooding. You can see large ponderosa pine logs piled upstream and downstream, carried here by massive floods during rain storms.
The ancestral pueblo people built hundreds of homes in the soft volcanic rocks of the canyon walls as well as large villages along the canyon floor.
