São Vicente was the first patron saint of Porto

Tradition says that our first king, having known, around 1176, that the body of S. Vicente was buried in the cape that now has the saint's name, ordered that they be transferred to Lisbon. But before that they would have to pass through Braga, considered, since time immemorial, the Catholic capital of Portugal.

On the trip to Braga, the procession passed through Porto and the azemola that carried the urn with the remains of S. Vicente entered, inadvertently and deliberately, into the cathedral inside which he suddenly died. This was understood as a sign that S. Vicente wanted his remains to remain there. But only one arm remained and S. Vicente was enthroned as the patron saint of the city of Porto. And he remained in office until he was dethroned, in 1453, by S. Pantaleão.

The curious thing about the story is that every year, on the day the Church celebrates in honor of St. Vincent, the altar of the latter, in the transept of the Cathedral, appears in full bloom and with a lit votive lamp. Which means that the cult of S. Vicente did not fall into the forgetfulness of the people of Porto.
