The scant remains of Morton Castle are located on a triangular area of land, guarded by steep drops to an artificial loch, in the hills above Nithsdale, in Dumfries and Galloway. Surprisingly, little is known about who built it and when. The architectural evidence suggests a date around the 1400s and that it may have borne a resemblance to the triangular plan of the nearby Caerlaverock Castle, with twin gatehouses at one corner. 

After being burnt by James VI in 1588, during a campaign against Catholics, it remained inhabited until around 1714 when it was finally abandoned and fell into ruin.
