Lamoille Canyon is one of several glacially carved canyons in the Ruby Mountains, situated in the basin and range region of the western United States.  Reaching altitudes above 11,000 feet, the range captures significant precipitation creating a cool green oasis above the surrounding desert.

From the vantage point of the photo, you can see the broad U-shaped valley carved during the last period of glaciation.
