Out of this World

Enjoy a unique collaborative effort of two solar astrophotographers, Jason Guenzel @thevastreaches and Andrew McCarthy @cosmic_background. This image is a full solar mosaic assembled by combining almost 100k individual photos of the Sun. The resulting view was then processed to reveal the layers of intricate details within the chromosphere. The appearance of the sprawling solar corona and star field are artistic elements of this composition. Great care was taken to align the two atmospheric layers in a scientifically plausible way using NASA's SOHO data as a reference. The final image is the most detailed and dynamic full image of our star either photographer has ever created. A blend of science and art An actual photograph of the 2017 total solar eclipse was adjusted to align the main features. It was then subtly layered against a backdrop of more distant stars. A blend of art and science, the result gives the impression of a scene that is quite literally impossible to photograph with today’s technology. To allow a 360° viewing experience, the zenith has been filled with a night sky of French Guyana by Muscapix, the Milky Way is not in its actual location relative to the sun… is just artistic.

More About Out of this World

The planet Earth has proven to be too limiting for our awesome community of panorama photographers. We're getting an increasing number of submissions that depict locations either not on Earth (like Mars, the Moon, and Outer Space in general) or do not realistically represent a geographic location on Earth (either because they have too many special effects or are computer generated) and hence don't strictly qualify for our Panoramic World project. But many of these panoramas are extremely beautiful or popular of both. So, in order to accommodate our esteemed photographers and the huge audience that they attract to 360Cities with their panoramas, we've created a new section (we call it an "area") called "Out of this World" for panoramas like these.Don't let the fact that these panoramas are being placed at the Earth's South Pole fool you - we had to put them somewhere in order not to interfere with our Panoramic World.Welcome aboard on a journey "Out of this World".

It looks like you’re creating an order.
