Mountain pasture Frasmatta (Alt. 973 Mt. M.s.l.) - Ornavasso.
The name of this mountain pasture, as with all of the mountain pastures of Ornavasso, is Walser origin and means 'meadow where the cattle eat'.
Walser (a contraction of the German Walliser, ie Valais, a resident of the Canton of Valais) are a people of German origin who live in the alpine regions around the massif of Monte Rosa. Define their spoken Titsch, related to Deutsch. http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walser Underlying the Marian iconography present on a wall of one of the huts, can be seen an inscription in Latin which means 'the language divides us, the heart unites us', and that expresses the feeling of twinning between Ornavasso and Naters (Switzerland ), from which the founders of origin Walser settled in this valley in the Middle Ages. The same inscription is present on the summit cross placed on top Eyehorn dominating on the Ornavassos's side of the mount Massone.
The name Piedmont comes from medieval Latin Pedemontium, i. e. "ad pedem montium", meaning "at the foot of the mountains": Piedmont, whose capital is Turin, is surrounded on three sides by the Alps, including Monviso, where Po river rises, and Monte Rosa. Lowland Piedmont is a fertile agricultural region, producing wheat, rice and maize and is one of the great winegrowing areas in Italy. The region contains major industrial centres: FIAT automobile plants in Turin, Ferrero's chocolate factories in Alba, tissue and silk manufactories in Biella, in Ivrea Olivetti was an important technology center, publishing in Turin and Novara.
