West Bay, Vatersay, Outer Hebrides

The beautiful and isolated West Bay beach is the scene of the Annie Jane disaster which claimed 348 lives when the emigrant ship foundered during an Atlantic storm in 1853.

The tiny island of Vatersay is home to fewer than 100 inhabitants. It is the southern-most populated island in the Outer Hebrides. Since 1991 it has had a permanent link to Barra via a causeway, providing access to the daily ferry service to the Scottish mainland.
