Steam locomotive Tornado powers the Jorvik Express across Gauxholme viaduct, Todmorden, West Yorkshire

The Jorvik Express - powered by Peppercorn class A1 Pacific No. 60163 Tornado - steams across Gauxholme Viaduct in Todmorden in early evening. The newest steam locomotive in the country, completed in 2008, is pictured here running along the Calder Valley line heading towards Manchester Victoria station before returning to Liverpool after a long circuit to York. Steam trains are an occasional but welcome sight on this working railway, but look right at home. Framed next to the Rochdale Canal and A6033 it illustrates how road, rail and water have all existed in close proximity for much of the steep-sided upper Calder valley since the Industrial Revolution reshaped the South Pennines.
