Souter Lighthouse, South Tyneside

A classic example of a red and white hooped coastal beacon, built to protect one of England's most dangerous stretches of coastline. Souter Lighthouse was the world's first lighthouse purpose-built to be powered by electricity. Completed in 1871 it remained operational until 1988.
