Antananarivo (the citiy of the Thousand) is the capital of madagascar. It is situated in the center of the island in the highlands (around 1.300 meters above sea level).

"The city of the Thousand" means that the first king of madagascar, King Andrianjaka, had thousend soldiers to protect him. He thought that nobody could kill one thousend people in a short time, so he would have enough time to flee.

In the town you can find typical french kitchen and some signs of the colonial time.

This view shows the government district and some parts of the upper town. You can also see the monument column in the Lac Anosy and the main stadium. In the north-east you can see the rebuildt royal palace.
