King Hut Alpine NP

Located near the head waters of the King River, deep in the Victorian High country, this hut has been used by local cattle farming families such as the McCormack, Hearn, Gough and Ross families  for generations.

Until recently cattle were allowed to graze the high pastures of this area

in summer, whilst in winter, snow often covers the ground.

It has also been used by generations of walkers, 4wd enthusiasts, and hunters as a welcome refuge in bad weather.

It burnt down due to an unintended fire in 2008. A combined effort by Parks Victoria, the Victorian High Country Huts Association (VHCHA), Mansfield Shire Council and 4WD Victoria, King Hut rebuilt and was officially opened on Wednesday 18 January 2012.

Restoration works were undertaken throughout 2011 and included clearing of grounds, digging post holes, and rebuilding the chimney stonework, leading up to the actual construction of the hut.

The area has extensive river flats for riverside camping and can be accessed by 4wd or Awd.
